Good morning, Golden! We hear about the worst bike accidents, but what about all the close calls? The drivers who drift into bike lanes, often without anyone noticing?

Well, thanks to the new concrete bike lane barriers on Ford and Jackson streets, the Woodards are inadvertently collecting data.

This weekend, family members heard two crashes within hours of each other, both involving the new barriers. The first driver hit one hard enough to deploy the airbags and send the barrier sliding down the road. About an hour later, another driver crashed into a different barrier nearby. Thankfully, no cyclists, drivers, or passengers were injured, and no other vehicles were involved.

My family and their neighbors checked on those involved and spoke with the responding officers, but I’ll leave the why behind these crashes to the authorities.

Those barriers have already taken two hits from cars that might otherwise have ended up in the bike lane. So, as a cyclist casual cruiser, I'm grateful they're there.

On a lighter note, Golden has plenty of other ways to get your heart pumping this week. It's Golden Hell Week, Halloween is nearly here, and there's a whole lot happening around town. 🎃

Oh and don’t forget the clocks “fall back” on Sunday! ⏰

MUST RUN

Golden Hell Week

Oh, fall…how I love the way you tickle my senses. The sight of leaves changing colors, the crunch of them under my boots, the smell of cinnamon spice in Home Depot, and the feeling of cold, hard earth scraping my knees as I go flying hands-first into the least technical section of Apex Trail.

Ah, yes. Fall is officially here. And yes, that actually happened TWO years in a row (once during Hell Week). In the same. exact. spot.

Which brings me to another beloved fall tradition involving questionable decisions and sore legs: it’s Golden Hell Week! If you've never participated, I think this is your year. Dust off those trail running or hiking shoes, hit the trails, and say hello to your fellow dirt-loving neighbors.

What I love most about this community-led week of trail running isn't the miles (or the occasional blood sacrifice to Apex). It's the familiar faces, the camaraderie, and the feeling of being part of something uniquely Golden. We're ridiculously lucky to have so many incredible trails in our backyard, and it's not too late to join the fun! You can run them on your own time within five days, and some people even run all of them in one day. 😳

And did I mention there’s an after-party Friday (6-8pm) at Mountain Toad? 🍻

So lace up, hit a trail or two (or five), and I'll see you out there! Just don’t let your guard down after the technical bits. 😉
