10/13 - Chili, Shakespeare Intensive, & a Harvest Haunt

Good Morning, Golden! Today is National Train Your Brain Day — so maybe skip the Wordle (gasp!) and flex those neurons with the New York Times crossword instead. I can feel the collective anger at this suggestion already. Don’t worry, going to bed early counts as brain training too so consider this your permission slip to curl up with your favorite book and call it “mental fitness.”

The list of Halloween and fall happenings keeps growing, starting with this weekend’s FestiFall so let’s get to it!

🎭 Calling All Thespians

Did you know Miner’s Alley offers adult classes and workshops?! Check out what they’re offering this fall…

Intimacy Direction 101 on 10/25 @ 5-8pm - “This three-hour workshop focuses on intimacy direction practices for theatrical productions. We will cover consent, communication, context, choreography, and closure when directing intimacy for the stage.”

Shakespeare Audition Intensive on 11/2 & 11/9 @ 5-8pm - “Take your Shakespeare audition monologues to the next level in this two-session intensive for adult actors looking to book their next Shakespeare gig. Together, we’ll break down your audition pieces to breathe new life into timeless language.”

Here’s a list of some of the fun events happening this month! I will continue to update this list each week.

Oct 18: Golden FestiFall at Parfet Park - “Our traditional Golden Beer & Chili Cookoff is now the Golden FestiFall…the festival will include tastings from more than 25 beers and drink alternatives, food samples from several local restaurants, activities for adults and kids, plus live music and a Silent Auction to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital.”

Oct 18: Harvest Haunt at the Colorado Railroad Museum - “[Our] annual Halloween-themed steam-up event comes back to ‘haunt the rails!’ Guests are encouraged to come in costume for Trick-or-Treating!

Oct 25: Mines Museum Spooktacular - “Come in your favorite costumes, enjoy STEM themed hands-on activities (and treats), win prizes, and take pictures with Ms. Colorado herself!!” FREE and includes face painting, spooky exhibits, and more!

Oct 26: Howl-O-Ween at The Golden Mill - Join for a spook-tacular dog-friendly Halloween celebration. Dog costume parade and contest, live music, pup treats, adoptable dogs, and more!

Oct 29: Harry Potter Trivia Night at The Golden Mill - Calling all witches, wizards, and Muggles! Test your knowledge of the wizarding world at our Harry Potter trivia night.

Oct 30: Colorado Blues Society Halloween Blues Ball at The Rose - Costume contest and two great bands.

Oct 31: Stranger Strings Halloween Party at New Terrain Brewing - “Foggy Mountain Spaceship [band] AND the once-annual release of our two beloved candy beers - Sour Patch Kids Sour & Almond Joy Brown. Be sure to put on your best Halloween attire for a Costume Contest w/ prizes!”

Oct 31: Let's Get Sheet Faced on Halloween at The Eddy - Live DJ spinning all night, a magician, tarot readings, a costume contest with fun prizes, local vendors, and a haunted photo booth.

Oct 31: Trick or Treat on Washington Ave from 3-5pm - Washington Avenue will be closed for kiddos in costumes to visit local businesses who generally hand out treats. Also, kids can decorate their own trick or treat bags at the library then go trick or treating to the Golden History Museum, Fire Station and Police Department. (Page 31)

Feedback on the Pay-As-You-Throw residential waste collection program - Fill out this city survey to provide your feedback on the city’s trash and recycling services by Oct 15. (I actually learned more about what services are available to me by taking the short survey. 😆)

No Parking Permits Required at The Golden Community Center Parking Lots - October 1 through May 1, there will be no parking permits required. Also note that all existing permits—Golden Resident, Downtown Employee, Downtown Resident and neighborhood permit zones—will roll over into 2026. (Page 9)

Benchmark Surveys Coming Soon - “Some of you may soon receive the City’s Community Benchmark Survey from Polco. Conducted every two to three years, this scientifically valid survey asks about city services, quality of life, and community priorities.” (Page 9)

Yard Waste Collection Nov 3-7 - Branches, leaves, and grass that won’t fit int your compost cart can be placed near where your trash is collected by 8am on your regular service day. This collection happens twice a year (Spring & Fall) and is for residents who participate in the Pay-As-You-Throw waste collection program. (Page 17)

  • 🚿 Shower Steamer Make & Take Class at Earth Sweet Boutique (10/15 @ 6pm) - “These shower steamers will be focused on cold & flu season to help open your lungs and respiratory tract.” Make 10 shower steamers in class.

  • 🤝 Up2Us GOlden Open Community Meeting (10/15 @ 6:30pm) - “Open community discussion on Up2Us Golden activities on immigrant protection, preserving democracy and rights, mobilizing participation in local elections, and story telling on the impacts of federal actions”

  • 📖 Mines Seminar on “Engineering, Meaning & Purpose” with Dr. Michael McGinnis (10/16 @ 4pm) - Open to the public, this event explores the profound transformation in welding. “Faced with a growing labor shortage, an aging workforce, and increasing technical demands, the profession must adapt not only through innovation but through intentional human formation.”
